MILLERS PAY THE PENALTY FOR MULTIPLE MISSED CHANCES AND CRASH OUT OF THE SENIOR CUP
It was a game the Millers should have put to bed by half time, but a host of missed chances meant that many of the Carlton faithful in the Howard Mitchell Sportsbar at half time were predicting that Carlton could well be made to pay and how right they were.
Jonny Gilbert should have put Carlton ahead early on with the goal at his mercy, both Nat Watson and Alex Howes hit the crossbar when their efforts looked goal bound and Niall Hylton blazed a great opportunity wide in a first half that the Millers dominated.
In fairness, Sherwood hit the bar to, but had few opportunities in a first half that the Millers controlled.
Sherwood knew at the interval, that they were still very much in the game and some of their passing movements made it very clear that they were capable of punishing the Millers and they struck early in the second half with two crucial goals that in affect put the game to bed.
Jack Conroy cut inside and hit a screamer past stand in keeper Josh Shattel who had been brought in on loan at the last minute from Derby County after Felix picked up an injury on Saturday.
The keeper impressed generally, particularly with his sweeping up in the first half, but when he parried an effort in the second half, Ewan Robson was on hand to turn the loose ball home to make it 2-0.
The Millers hit the bar for a third time and Alex Howes saw another guilt edged chance saved by Sherwood keeper Jordan Pierrepoint, as did the Millers best player on the night Niall Davie.
It was clearly not going to be the Millers night and Sherwood nearly added a third, but they to hit the bar and then brought a fine save from Shattel, before the Millers secured a consolation through Michael Ford from a rebound, it was to little to late and in fairness, despite getting balls into the box, the Millers never looked like getting on the end of anything and congratulations to Sherwood who go through to the next round of the senior cup and their small band of supporters who left Stoke Lane happy indeed.
Carlton’s defeat was their second in 3 days and the Millers management will be hoping for a positive response when they face Stockbridge Park Steels on Saturday at Stoke Lane and in particular that they can put away some of the chances the next time, that their generally enterprising football helps them create.
