Lions Come Out On Top After Entertaining Game With Keyworth
The Lions progressed to the quarter-finals of the Sunday League Cup with an entertaining and hard-fought 3-1 win over Keyworth United Black.
The game got off to a very promising start for the Lions as they dominated the ball with quick passing and combination play. The opening goal came just after the 20 minute mark, when Mackenzie Rooney floated a pass over the Keyworth defence to find Ethan Turnball. He controlled the ball well and calmly beat the onrushing goalkeeper, giving the team a deserved early lead. Keyworth fought back and drew level 10 minutes later, picking out an unmarked man at the back-post, who controlled it and finished well. The Lions regained the lead just before half-time with a fantastic piece of skill from Joel Daft. Receiving the ball on the right, he cut inside onto his left foot and shot over the keeper into the far corner of the goal. It was a great goal and gave the team an important lead going into the break.
The second half saw Keyworth change their formation as they chased the game. This put Carlton under pressure in the early stages of the half, but the team defended resolutely and soon managed to make use of the additional space in the attacking third. Ethan Turnbull got his second of the game and it was another excellent goal. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, he curled the ball into the top corner as the keeper was caught slightly off his line. It was the final goal for either team, but Keyworth will feel they had their chances to get something from the game. A penalty miss with 15 minutes to go and a great save from Josh Fawcett kept the score at 3-1 and confirmed Carlton’s progression into the next round of the cup.
It was a high-quality match for the neutral and both teams will take positives from their performances. Details for the next round will follow once the draw has taken place.
