LATE PENALTY BLOW FOR MILLER’S MEANS A SHARE OF THE POINTS AT STOKE LANE
Carlton Town had to settle for a point after Ollie Clark, who scored the decisive goal for the Millers on Saturday, saw his injury time penalty saved by Ross Coombe in the Ashington goal on Tuesday evening in front of a decent midweek crowd of 171 at Stoke Lane.
Ashington had looked far from a team near the foot of the table and I guess that just highlights the strength of this league.
The general opinion among many supporters was that whoever got the first goal, would win this game and that big chance undoubtedly fell to the Millers after Coombe himself and actually brought down Michael Ford.
Carlton had stepped up the pressure during periods in the second half and a great effort from Alex Howes and a powerful volley from the all action Millers Captain Niall Davie both came close to getting Carlton that vital breakthrough.
Ashington were still a threat at the other end however, with Wilson Kneeshaw particularly dangerous in possession and the visitors forced a number of corners as the game ebbed and flowed, but both teams defended decisively, until the late penalty heartache for Ollie Clark sent the Millers fans home applauding their team’s effort and endeavour, but disappointed it was only one point and not three.
Carlton move up to 8th in the table with 22 points from 14 games, which leaves them 5 points outside the playoffs and are back on the road on Saturday when they travel to Newton Aycliffe.
The coach is set to leave the ground at 10am and Millers Barn at 10.30pm and the cost to join the players and management team for that journey is just £15 return, contact Boatsy on 07907 064189 to book your seat, children travel free.
