CARLTON AND MERTHYR TO PLAY FOR THE JONNY OWEN CUP
Carlton Town now have the added incentive of beating Merthyr Town in their first big pre season friendly on Saturday 6th July in Wales as the two teams will now be playing for the “Jonny Owen Cup”
The former Talk Sport presenter who produced the brilliant documentary “I believe in Miracles” all about Nottingham Forest’s incredible rise under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, which saw the club win back to back European Cups in 1979 and 1980 was born in Merthyr, but gets down when he can to watch his local non league side Carlton Town at Stoke Lane.
He arranged the annual pre season game between the two clubs four years ago and this year, it is Carlton’s turn to travel to Merthyr.
The cup has come about thanks to Kev Cooper at the Yel who put a call in to Jonny Owen’s great friend Boatsy who was delighted with the idea and Kev has kindly donated the cup.
Jonny and his wife Vicky McClure who herself has donated a significant numbers of signed memorabilia pieces to the club put out a joint statement for us.
“We are honoured to have this trophy contested between two fantastic football clubs, run for the right reasons. Carlton and Merthyr Town. People like Mick, Gary, Les and Mark are the reason why I love this game. They care so much. Let’s keep supporting them. Long may this fixture continue”
