A LOVELY SEND OFF FOR ROGER IN PLUNGAR, GEDLING AND CARLTON
One of the saddest days in Carlton Town’s history, was also a very memorable one, with a lovely service in Plungar at a packed out St Helen’s Church giving Roger Smith a remarkable send off.
The Hearse then travelled to Gedling Crematorium, stopping off at the Bill Stokeld Stadium for Roger’s final visit to the ground and the club he loved and helped fund and support for many years of his life.
He had been player, manager, Chairman and finally President of the club and thrown himself into every one of those positions as only Roger could.
There was a lovely welcome party of current players, former players, supporters, committee members and management and those who had rushed back to the ground from the church to ensure they were there to meet the Funeral party.
The was a huge turnout at Gedling Crematorium as well, with many who could not make the 2pm church service attending the crematorium.
There was also an excellent turnout at Carlton Town throughout the afternoon and early evening with those attending the church and the Crematorium finally coming together to share their memories from about 5pm.
Food was laid on by the club and it was a smashing atmosphere in the Howard Mitchell Sportsbar.
Family members and friends from Roger’s village had also returned to The Anchor pub in Plungar where a second wake was taking place, some people don’t have a wake at all, Roger had 2, that summed up his popularity and indeed the brilliant man that he was and everyone at Carlton Town send their best wishes to Roger’s lovely family and look forward to seeing them at Carlton Town in the not to distant future.
RIP ROGER ❤️
