5K FOR RAINBOWS, HAREWOOD HITS FOUR AND RECORD ATTENDANCE FOR THE MILLERS
The Superstar Speakers event held at Stoke Lane proved to be the biggest event ever staged at the ground with 1,722 spectators inside the Bill Stokeld Stadium for the Sunday 9th February clash between Manchester United Legends and the Legends of Nottingham, mainly ex Nottingham Forest players.
The legends of Nottingham ran out 9-3 winners with former Forest star Marlon Harewood scoring 4 goals in a man of the match performance.
The real winners on the day where the brilliant Rainbows Hospice who received a cheque from Superstar Speakers on the day of £5,000 and with the bucket collection as well, will have raised some more.
This website understands that Superstar Speakers have now raised over 100k for the Charity, a brilliant achievement indeed and the Millers were delighted to have played their part in what was a cracking afternoon in cold but dry conditions.
The game went out around the world with co commentator Nigel Jemson on brilliant form as part of the commentary team and front man, OldTrafford’s Alan Keegan on wonderful form all afternoon with his snap interviews with who ever he could lay his hands on.
Chairman Mick Garton was stopped for a word along with club Ambassador Ian Storey-Moore, who of course played for both Forest and Manchester United.
The only slight disappointment for United fans was that Mark Hughes had to pull out late on after being appointed Carlisle United’s new manager at the end of last week, Carlton’s kit man, the legend that is Phil Jennings was called up as a late replacement, presumably it made his day, the Carlton Volunteer had played for a Manchester United team and played among some true legends.
This website has today received an official press statement from Carlton Town 24 hours after the historic day.
“The club would like to thank all the volunteers from both the committee and supporters side who gave their day up to help with this massive event, in particular the Dorking branch who travelled down and got stuck in, the planning that went into this event was like no other with meetings, hours spent on the phone and much more. the club is not going to put out a list thanking individuals from inside the club because there were so many, but those who went above and beyond know who they are, so thankyou very much indeed to you all”
“One man we can name is friend of the club and former head safety officer for 3 decades at the City Ground Alan Bexon, who ran the security operation on the day for the club and it is safe to say that without someone of his experience and standing running the operation, we could not have gone ahead with the game”
“Further thanks to Mark and Danny at the Boot Room for their help with the game, Dave Wheat at Nottingham Labels, John at Budweiser, Jes and his team, Ruth at Libra, Oakfield Construction and all the staff , both at the club and at Superstar Speakers who have been a pleasure to work with”
”We are bound to have forgot a few people, so apologies if that’s the case”
Finally we move onto a wonderful lady who volunteered for us in the day on Secondment from Manchester United Tv, producer and presenter Karen who not only brought the first ever bottle of Champagne sold at Stoke Lane, ( See picture) but then joined Carlton Town Tv for one day only and was on post match duty for the Millers.
