Promotion Confirmed

A fantastic crowd of 663 packed into the Dog and Duck and Carlton will be glad they did not need a result to stop up because particularly in the first half, the Millers were never at the races.

It was Carltons fourth consecutive away defeat which is in stark contrast to their home form with the Millers not being beaten at Stoke Lane since a 1-0 defeat to Leek Town on February 18th .

Manager Wayne Scott put out a strong side, resisting the temptation to rest players ahead of the Nottinghamshire County Cup Final but he can not legislate for individual mistakes and the Millers never really got going in the first half, finding themselves 4-0 down at the interval courtesy of a Tom Lorraine hatrick and an unfortunate Lawrence Gorman own goal.

Carlton improved in the second half and had chances to score and indeed Mellors-Blair did pull one back, but the damage was already done and a wonderful free kick from Shaun Richards sealed Carltons fate.

The result means AFC Rushden & Diamonds meet Witton Albion in the playoffs at Witton and on this performance, Diamonds will give them plenty to think about.

The other Semi Final will be between Spalding and Stocksbridge Park Steels who put together a great late run to sneak into 4th place.

Massive credit to Loughborough Dynamoe who retained their Evostick status with a 4-1 home win over Market Drayton while Rugby Town and Northwich Victoria who had 10 points deducted were relegated.

Basford United destroyed Newcastle Town 6-0 but could not progress to the Playoffs without Carlton picking up something at Diamonds, which obviously they did not and their 3 point deduction ultimately cost them a playoff place, while Northwichs deduction cost them their Evostick status.

Leek Town finished in style beating Gresley 5-1 but also missed out on the playoffs as did Lincoln United who went down 4-1 at Romulus.

Carlton finished 19th on 42 points, comfortably avoiding the drop by 12 points in the end, with their improvement this season starting back in November when they beat Market Drayton Town 3-0.

From that day Carlton only lost another 9 league games and in total counting County Cup games, the Millers won 11, drew 9 and lost 9 of their final 29 games.

This was in stark contrast to their start to the season which saw them win just 3 games and draw 3 games in the first 20 in all competitions, losing 14 games which at that point was indeed relegation form.

Credit should be given to the management and players for the significant turnaround which sees the Millers live to fight another day in Evostick Division One South and reach the Final of the Notts Senior Cup for only the 4th time in their 113 year history, yes they are underdogs but a cup final looked a pipe dream back in November after the Millers had been ripped apart by Spalding going down 5-2 at home in the League Cup.

5 months is indeed a long time in football in the current day and age and it will be interesting to see the make up of the league next season!

Corby Town, Frickley Athletic, Ilkeston FC and Skelmersdale United were relegated from the Premier Division while Blyth Spartans were promoted as Champions with a whopping 101 points..

Congratulations to them and to Shaw Lane Aquaforce who topped Division One South with a fantastic 102 points and Lancaster City who won Evostick Division One North by a point finishing on a decisive 85 points.
