Carlton Towns excellent unbeaten run came to an end at high flying neighbours Basford United in the big Boxing Day local derby at Greenwich Avenue.

An excellent crowd of 221 saw Carlton play on Basfords new 4G pitch for the first time , but the result was a reversal of last years fixture which saw the Millers triumph 2-1.

A win today against a Basford side who have lost only once on their new surface in the league this season was a big ask, but Carlton came into the game with confidence on the back of some fine results of late.

Ben Hutchinson gave Basford an 8th minute lead after the home team started the brighter, but William Mellors-Blair pulled Carlton level early in the second half.

With the game in the balance, Reece Bertram powered a towering header past Jack Steggles and despite a late 25 yard effort from Danny Elliot that went just wide, Basford hung on to claim the 3 points and remain 7th in the table, just outside the playoff positions.

Results towards the foot of the table however did not go Carltons way, with wins for Market Drayton and Rugby Town and a draw for Loughborough Dynamos making it a bad day at the office for Wayne Scotts Millers.

Scott will be hoping Carlton can start another run to continue the excellent momentum they had built in recent weeks with the Millers back in action on Thursday, when Spalding are the visitors to Stoke Lane 7.45pm.

Boxing day proved a bad day for most local sides with Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Mansfield Town all suffering single goal defeats like Carlton, but spare a thought for Ilkeston FC who went down 7-0 to Micklover in the big Derbyshire local Derby.
