Carlton Town finally got their first win of the campaign with a hard fought 1-0 away win at Rugby Town.

The Millers came up against former striking star Darryl Thomas for the second time this season and it is not even September yet. Thomas was in the dugout masterminding Loughborough Dnyamos last minute equaliser as stand in manager 3 weeks ago and here he was leading the line for Rugby after signing for them.

The game was a close one and could have gone either way but a solid defensive display from Carlton and in particular man of the match Captain Romaine Graham, helped Carlton keep their first clean sheet of the season.

New signing Shaun Rickford put in a decent shift up front and it was good to see Julian Topliss back in a Millers shirt coming on in the first half for the injured Callum Keane.

Substitute Curtis Millward was brought on at just the right time by manager Wayne Scott and with the game opening up as Rugby pushed for their 3rd win on the bounce on what was a very warm afternoon, Millward started to stretch the tiring Rugby defence.

The game was in the balance and it was 2 pieces of magic, one at each end that proved pivotal, the first a great flying save from Steggles after his error seconds earlier had nearly cost a goal, the second a great finish from Danny Gordon after feeding off a great flick on from Rickford.

Both players are pictured above with team mate Josh Rae at last seasons presentation night, Rae was also part of the winning Millers side at Rugby.

Carlton had a few nervy moments late on but they held firm to secure their first win and move up to 16th in the table, they will be hoping this result and performance gives them something to build on, there was certainly an air of relief at the final whistle!
